Domestic Use Of Spy Satellites To Widen

by Mitch Martin on August 16, 2007

Any body remember that Will Smith movie Enemy of the State?

A program approved by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the Department of Homeland Security will allow broader domestic use of secret overhead imagery beginning as early as this fall, with the expectation that state and local law enforcement officials will eventually be able to tap into technology once largely restricted to foreign surveillance.

“You also can get more coverage more often,” Richelson said. “These satellites will cover during the course of their orbits the entire United States. They will be operating 24 hours a day and using infrared cameras at night.”

Does this bother anyone else? The government has invested billions of dollars into satellites that will allow them to spy on other countries but now they are being turned back on us. They are using the usual explanation of preventing terrorism but they have added a new one: illegal immigration. Illegal immigration, really!? Here is a news flash. Most of the illegal aliens are coming through the 1,951 mile border between the U.S. and Mexico that has more holes than a goddamn wheel of swiss cheese. You don’t need a satellite in outer fucking space to figure that one out.

Politicians have been leveraging 9/11 since 9/12 to strip civil liberties from American citizens all in the name of security. A lot of people like to blame it on Bush and think it will change when he leaves office. The bad news is that it won’t. We have allowed politicians to travel to far down the path for them to stop and turn back now. Domestic wire tapping now domestic satellite surveillance what is next?

Well it certainly won’t change if another republican is elected (read current poll leader Giuliani)….in fact just last year and again this year repubs voted down party lines to support Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program.
