Well you can’t turn on a single news program this morning without hearing about Britney Spear’s comeback performance last night at the Video Music Awards in Las Vegas. My lady friend was really itching to see it so we ended up watching it online before it even aired on our west coast TV feed. It doesn’t really matter how you watch it because it looked like crap either way. In fact the best part was when the camera panned to Diddy, 50 Cent and Chris Brown who all had facial expressions of shock / physical pain during the performance. At one point when the camera panned to Rihanna she was actually laughing out loud. She looked drunk, stoned or possibly both. She was sort of wandering around the stage wide eyed like she wasn’t sure why she was even there. It didn’t even look like she was into the performance or enjoying herself at all.
I was listening to the Adam Carolla show this morning on the way to the gym and he made a really good point about the performance which I will sort of steal and paraphrase here. There are people out there that just have talent. Mariah Carey, Terrell Owens or John Travolta all have natural talent. They can act crazy, disappear for a while or do whatever and when they decide to make a comeback that natural talent comes through and they can recreate their previous success and fame. Britney’s problem is that she was manufactured from day one. Back when she was big that was the result of zillions of hours in the studio, rehearsing dance moves and practicing her lip syncing. Now that she is a Mom and slightly crazy she isn’t willing to put in those hours and she doesn’t have natural talent like Whitney Houston’s pipes to fall back on. It sucks for her but if she isn’t willing to put in the time to get back to her manufactured level of performance it might be time for her to pack it up and take it home.
I am not going to embed the video of the performance here but click the link if you missed it and would like to check it out.
