Yep, you read that right. On Saturday the 19th the winners of the 2008 World Beer Cup where announced in San Diego, California. In the category of American-Style Light Lager Old Milwaukee Light took home the gold medal against 34 other beers. I guess my grandpa and uncles are ahead of their time because they have been slamming Old Milwaukee Light as long as I have been alive.
I think the most surprising win, at least for me, came in the category of American-Style Specialty Lager. Apparently “specialty lager” is a fancy way of saying malt liquor. The winners in this category were Steel Reserve (Gold), Busch Ice (Silver) and Mickey’s Ice (Bronze). My first reaction is to wonder if the judges even tasted these “specialty lagers” but then I realized the field was 28 entries deep. What would the Steel be matched up against? Hurricane Ice, Olde English 800 or Colt 45? Considering the field maybe Steel Reserve does taste the least like horse piss out of all the competitors.
