“I don’t need a lawyer,” Baldwin, 48, with no permanent address, told Judge Sawako Gardner. “I’ve been in this court more than you have.”
The sad thing is that Paul Baldwin is probably right. Baldwin has been arrested 152 times. This time he was picked up for stealing a $1.99 can of beer from a mini-mart. He tried to tell the cops that at the time of his arrest he was actually returning to the mini-mart to pay for the beer, which he had already drank.
Our prisons are already crowded enough but if someone manages to hit triple digits on number of arrests can’t we send them to an island or something? I wonder how many thousands of dollars the city of Portsmouth wasted running this guy through the system over a $1.99 can of beer.
