London officials decided recently that it was no longer legal to drink alcohol while riding the city’s subway system because of the resulting “antisocial behavior” and “minor crime”. I guess my first question would be, why was this OK in the first place? But since it was OK, and then later banned, I am of course pissed. And apparently Londoners were as well. They spent their last day of legally boozing on the subway in style.
A couple social networking sights got the word out that it was the last day and they were planning to throw a drunken party. And so they did. Let’s see. Hundreds of people stuffed onto a subway car + lots of booze. This is gonna be good.
Party-goer quotes:
‘Like rush hour but fun. There were people’s sweaty armpits in my face but I didn’t care because I was drinking.’
‘There are guys drinking from funnels.’
‘I just downed a can of beer in 10 seconds. It’s sweaty on [the subway] but I’m going round and round until I vomit.’
Of course, the jolly-making didn’t last long. 6 cars were damaged and pulled from service. People vomiting everywhere. Several fights leading to 17 arrests. Subway stations shut down. Now that’s a party.

Any city that wants to up the ridership on it’s mass transit system should adopt a pro booze policy ASAP.
I would start riding the bus tomorrow if I could crack a few cold ones on the ride home.
Beer drinking still has a green light on Queretaro’s mass transit. I enjoy a tall can of Tecate almost every Friday afternoon on my way home from school.
I was in London in 2000 and not only could you drink on the tube but they would sell drinks outside of pubs for drinking on the street. These drinks were in glass glasses as well. That stuff would never work in America, not only would people steal the glasses that’s be throwing them at the front of the bar at closing as well.
I’d hate to think that London was going all “sober”.
