In a bid to move out of third place in the AL East, the enterprising New York Yankees reached an agreement with slugger Richie Sexson. The move is easily justified when you consider that NY will pay Sexson a pro-rated share of the league minimum salary, $390,000, leaving the Mariners to cover the remainder of his $14 million contract. Although Sexson isn’t really a slugger, more of a guesser, Yankee management is looking for him to fill part of the void left by injuries to Hideki Matsui and Johnny Damon.
The good news for the Yankees, and Sexson, is that they plan to only hit him against left handed pitching. It might be the last chance for Sexson to raise his value by becoming a permanent platooner.
Sexson hit .344 with five home runs in 71 at-bats against lefties this year. That was his bright spot during a season in which the 33-year-old Sexson hit .218 overall with 11 homers and 30 RBIs.
I personally don’t see how this will help the Yankees. If anything, it’s going to hurt Giambi’s playing time against left handed pitchers. I’d rather have Giambi (with mustache) versus a lefty than Richie Sexson versus anybody. Of course, Giambi is on my fantasy team, and I’m from Seattle, so I’m a little biased.

You might be biased but you’re not from Seattle.

The 20th highest paid player in the league drops to a pro-rated league minimum biatch.
