One Pill, One Buzz Kill

Researchers at Oregon Health and Science University have developed a pill that they believe blocks booze from giving you that happy euphoric feeling you get after having your first couple of drinks i.e. your buzz. They drug doesn’t prevent the effects of alcohol on your brain and body it just allows you to get shitfaced drunk and maintain that cranky prick attitude all night.

CP 154,526 physically binds to a receptor in the brain called corticotrophin-releasing factor one (CRF1). The receptor blocks corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF), a chemical released by alcohol that is thought to create pleasurable feelings.

That’s a lot of fancy science talk for “no buzz”. Researchers hope this drug will help alcoholics from relapsing and prevent people from getting too shitfaced. They reason that if you don’t feel all happy and bubbly after your first drink you probably won’t go back the bar for rounds four, five and six. I understand the logic but most booze hounds aren’t quitters and they aren’t really drinking for the buzz, they are drinking to get shit face drunk. So if the pill still allows them to d0 that I kind of see them passing go and moving right past the buzz stage to the cranky drunk meathead stage.
