Fantasy Football: Waiver Wire Scramble Week 3

by Baba Ganoush on September 23, 2008

Let’s not dwell on the past too much, but last week’s suggestions were pretty spot on. I will, however, take this opportunity to call out Diggles for digging on Larry Johnson. Although LJ personally ruined my fantasy team last year, he was able to manage 121 yards and 1 TD last week. Those are pretty decent stats, but it was also against Atlanta’s defense. Anyway…

The third week of the NFL season has come and gone, and if you’re 0-3 in fantasy football matches the record of the Detroit Lions, Cleveland Browns, St. Louis Rams, Cincinnati Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs, you might want to consider firing yourself. Or at least win a fucking game, it’s that simple. Although, start to take notice of upcoming bye weeks for your key players, strategery now becomes an important part of the season.

On to the waiver wire scramble for week 3:

Trade for Carson Palmer, QB, Cincy: Palmer finally got his first TD pass of the year, yay! The offense was starting to click and that’s impressive against the NY Giants. The Bengals have Dallas in two weeks, but should be able to put up some decent number in the next six weeks leading up to their bye week. Defense is still suspect, meaning it’s in Palmer’s hands to come from behind and throw the ball a shitload. Plus, Chad Johnson is still waiting for his breakout week.

Drop Santonio Holmes, WR, Pitt: How many of you suffered through that Philly/Pitt game last week? I only watched the highlights and I wanted to rip my own eyes out. The Eagles found the achilles heel of the Steelers, and that’s blitzing Big Ben non-stop. Who suffers, his wide receivers. Holmes has only 145 yards receiving through three weeks, dump him and pick-up a FA on a more proficient offense.

Pick-up Jason Campbell, QB, Washington/J.T. O’Sullivan, QB, San Fran: Yahoo! has this cool feature on their fantasy football league that tells you the percentage of leagues in which a team owns a player. I think this stat is just there for people to feel better about themselves when picking up free agents. Well, two guys with the lowest rankings and the highest fantasy points are QBs Jason Campbell and J.T. O’Sullivan. Everyone probably freaked out when Campbell was crap-tastic in the opener against the Giants, but in back-to-back weeks he’s been pretty solid. Two games against Dallas in the next seven weeks is scary, but Campbell could be a good safety net at the QB position, or as a filler for your other QB(s) during their bye week. The 49ers are tied for first in the NFC West? WTF!?!?! This is thanks to O’Sullivan, he’s shown a steady hand the last two weeks and isn’t prone to the turnovers that Alex Smith gift wrapped for much of the NFL last season. O’Sullivan is only going to get better as the year goes on and could become a reliable fantasy point provider late in the season if the 49ers continue their run.

Don’t Bother with TJ Duckett, RB, Seattle: 79 yards rushing and 2 TDs last week, holy fuck, pick this guy up NOW! Wrong. Duckett got everything in garbage time against the St. Louis Rams. And this was after Julius Jones got 140 yards. Duckett may become a good short-yardage/goal line running back, but the likelihood of these statistics showing up again on the stat line are not good. Plus, the Hawks have a bye week this week and Maurice Morris should be coming back to the squad soon.

Drop Tony Siragusa, Sideline Reporter, Fox Sports: I want his job. His gameday responsibilities include: eating food at tailgate parties, talking to players during pregame, talking to fans, watching the game from the endzone, and making pointless comments throughout the game with no substance besides the fact he used to be a football player. What a hack.

You forgot that Siragusa also takes every opportunity to mention/show off his Super Bowl ring. Like it somehow legitimizes his douche bag sideline reporting.
