Fantasy Football: Call For Backup

by J Diggles on October 24, 2008

My main team produced a league high in points last week thanks to a lack of bye-weeks, a Rhodes pickup and a season best performance from Steven Jackson.  And as you can see, if I am depending on Rhodes as an RB2, then something must be wrong…and you are probably in the same boat.  But there is hope!  Starting RBs Kolby Smith, Cedric Benson and Justin Fargas are widely available.  They may not be the draft day gems that you thought you had in Larry johnson, Darren McFadden and Rudi Johnson, but they are capable RB3/Flex plays that will pull you through the bye-week doom.

Last week my start pick Jeff Garcia dominated Seattle’s terrible defense (Winner), but Heath Miller looked more like me out there against Cinci (Loser).  Detroit’s RBs were bad (Winner), Slaton was good (Winner), and Randy Moss reincarnated Tom Brady (Loser).  Season: 16-16-3.

Sit QB Kurt Warner: I know it’s hard to think about.  They have one of the more prolific passing offenses in the league and are 6th in scoring.  But Boldin will be back and he will be a little gunshy and the Carolina line will absolutely put Warner on his ass a few times.  Since leaving Orlando Pace’s right buttcheeck, Warner has been one of the most frenetic QBs under pressure.  And look what happened to Drew Brees last week.  Diggles line: 275 yards, 0 TDs, 2 Picks.

Start RB Steven Jackson: Someone has their swagger back, not to mention a new coach, not to mention facing an old and battered D.  Diggles line: 100 total yards, 2 TDs.

Sit RB LenDale White: Thunder is going to have to take a backseat to lightning in this one.  Indy will plug it up the middle vs White, but may give up a couple big ones to Chris Johnson.  Diggles line: 55 total yards, 0 TDs.

Start TE John Carlson: It has been a more depressing season than most for tight ends.  And this week is no different, which is why this joker can be considered one of the better ones available.  San Fran’s D is moderate, but Carlson will get enough looks given the receivers around him to be effective.  Diggles line: 67 yards, 1TD.

Start QB Terrell Owens: Just when you think they are about to implode, Dallas will surprise you.  Another week under Brad Johnsons belt will means lots of presents for TO owners.  Diggles line: 120 yards, 1TD.
