The Washington Redskins last home game prior to a presidential election has been a good gauge on who will win the presidency. When the Redskins lose their last home game before an election, and the incumbent president is not on the ticket, the White House changes parties. The superstition held true in the 2000 election, when Bush took over the White House when the Redskins lost to Tennessee.
This really isn’t going to help your fantasy team, but I felt it was necessary today, since every other piece of news will have something to do with the election. On to the waiver wire scramble for week 9:
Pick-up Michael Jenkins, WR, Atlanta - When Atlanta is facing a lesser opponent, Matt Ryan is usually able to dissect the defense and run up the score. Jenkins has become a favorite receiver in this scenario and the match-up against the Oakland defense last week was favorable. This week it’s New Orleans, they aren’t a less opponent, but expect a shootout.
Hold on Sage Rosenfels, QB, Houston - The Texans offense has been looking good recently, pretty much since Rosenfels blew a win a couple weeks back with late turnovers. Baltimore creates some tough match-ups, but there will also be a lot of throwing when Houston gets behind. If Rosenfels has learned from his previous mistakes, he could be a viable fantasy option in the weeks to come.
Drop Steven Jackson, RB, St. Louis - Mid-season injuries and just all-around sucking is reminding me a lot of the Steven Jackson of last year. Things were looking up for the Rams for a couple weeks, but they should be falling back to reality at a rapid pace. Expect the injury to linger and Jackson to struggle to get a steady fantasy statistics.
Pick-up Byron Leftwich, QB, Pittsburgh - Now Leftwich didn’t put up ridiculous fantasy stats this past week after coming in at halftime for Ben Roethlisberger, but that’s not necessary for Pittsburgh to win. Maybe your an Obama supporter and want to be a little sentimental, making a political statement by picking up Leftwich based on the above - he basically secured a win for Obama today.
