It’s fair to say everyone has inflected some pain on themselves before. I know I’ve accidentally cut my finger with a knife, banged my head on something, and even gave myself a wicked nut-shot back in the day (thank goodness YouTube and camera-phones weren’t around back in the early ’90s), but it takes a real piece of work to shoot yourself. Just ask Plaxico Burress. In case you were too busy with holiday shopping or too stuffed from Thanksgiving to get out of bed all weekend (and yesterday), Burress spent his Black Friday at a club in New York, where he managed to shoot himself in the thigh with the concealed handgun that he was carrying.
Obviously, this brings up the parallels with Cheddar Bob, Eminem’s goofy friend in the movie “8 Mile.” After threatening to stop a street fight by pulling his gun, Cheddar puts the gun away in his waistband and unloads another round into his groin/thigh area. This is how I imagine things going down with Burress, even though he claims the gun slipped from its holding position and in an attempt to grab it, shot the gun. Now, I’m not sure which scenario is worse…
Now that Burress is officially out for a while, that brings us to the first pick-ups of the Waiver Wire Scramble for week 13:
Pick-up Amani Toomer/Domenik Hixon, WRs, New York Giants - After Plaxico Burress shot himself in the foot leg Friday night, there was a mad scramble for the Giants’ wide-receivers. Sure Burress was still nursing a hamstring injury, but now he has a bigger problem, like nursing a jail sentence and possible suspension from the NFL. Toomer is the vet of the receiving corp, and Hixon is the youngin’, both will have significant opportunities as the Giants look to lock-up their playoff spot and home field advantage in the next couple weeks. After that, expect the Giants to rest their WRs and keep them healthy for the post-season run and a repeat.
Pick-up Tashard Choice, RB, Dallas - Marion Barber is the most recent Cowboy to get the injury bug, and Tashard Choice is lucky back-up in Dallas. Choice racked up 57 yards against Seattle on Thanksgiving, which is a huge confidence builder for both the back and the offensive coordinator. Even though Dallas and Romo are pass-happy, if Choice proves to be a legit offensive threat, expect the opportunities to continue coming his way. Dallas will also want to save Barber for the post-season run, meaning limited carries once they secure a playoff spot (which will happen soon enough).
Hold on Carnell Williams, RB, Tampa Bay - The Cadillac is back, but in a back-up role. He got a feel-good TD on Sunday against New Orleans, but his carries will continue to be limited with Warrick Dunn as the starter. There will be more opportunities down the road, but the Bucs are likely to still give the majority of carries and scoring opps to Dunn in the meantime.
Don’t Bother with Ken Dorsey, QB, Cleveland - Brady Quinn is down, Derek Anderson is down, and the Browns’ seasons is essentially down the toilet too. Ken Dorsey is the last man standing in Cleveland, and if you have negative points in your fantasy league, I would stay away from this free agent pick-up. Dorsey faces the Titans and Eagles on the road the next two weeks… not to mention Braylon Edwards can’t catch a ball this year, so consider leaving this back-up turned emergency starter off your roster.
