As TastyBooze’s resident film geek, I thought I would weigh in on the recently announced Oscar nominations.
First off, unlike those godless Eurotrash Golden Globe bastards, Mamma Mia is thankfully completely absent from the list of nominees. Unfortunately, The Dark Knight was not nominated for Best Picture, as many geeks had hoped might happen.
Most everything else went according to plan, with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (also the lock for “Most Alternate Porn Title Variations”) weighing in with 13 nominations. Slumdog Millionaire was well represented as well, which is exciting. I love that Robert Downey Jr. was nominated for Tropic Thunder, since his character was basically a parody of award-mongering Hollywood actor-holes. Unfortunately, due to the inevitability of Heath Ledger’s win in that category, we won’t get to hear Downey’s hilarious speech.
If you haven’t seen Man on Wire, the lock for best documentary feature, you really need to. It’s an amazing film about a dude that strung a wire between the world trade center towers and TIGHTROPE WALKED BETWEEN THEM…LIKE 10 TIMES. Seriously, it’s one of the better made documentaries I’ve ever seen.
And somewhat of a surprise was the nomination of Wall-E for best original screenplay. Considering there were about 25 words in the whole flick, that’s pretty impressive. Also, if you saw Wall-E in the theater (and if you didn’t, you are a heartless bastard) then you remember the HILARIOUS Pixar short that preceded it, Presto. It was nominated for best animated short film, and it really deserves to win. If you haven’t seen it, or you feel like laughing your ass off all over again, you can watch it below.
