Friday Beer Review - Guinness Draught

Name of Brew: Guinness Draught

Style of Brew: Nitrogenated Stout

ABV: 4.2%

Nutritional Info: 120 cal/ 12 oz

I’m half-assing it this week and going with what I just happened to have in the fridge. I think we’ve all probably had at least one Guinness and if not pull your head out of your ass and head down to your local Irish pub. Guinness pours with an initial light brown color that transitions into a deep black with a slightly off white head as the bubbles rise to the top. When you first taste the beer you get a slight hint of vanilla followed by a malty flavor with hints of chocolate and bitter coffee.

Every beer is better on tap but Guinness has gone the extra mile to give the home drinker an authentic Guinness experience. Each can and bottle has a small ball filled with nitrogen that is released when the beer is opened. I don’t know who invented it but I do know that the bastard deserves some kind of Nobel prize.

While it’s surprising light in calories Guinness definitely sits in your stomach like any other heavy stout. You’re not going to be able to put down six or seven in a single night but that isn’t really what Guinness is made for. If you really want to stick with Guinness but you’re looking to catch a serious buzz than ask the bar keep for an Irish Car Bomb. A half pint of Guinness with a shot of Jameson dropped in hasn’t failed me on a St. Paddy’s day yet.

Really? That is to say this sat heavy? I’m not a big beer drinker but I could easily stomach a 12 pack. Stout on the other hand 9 or 10 will do me in.

The thing I’d like someone to chime in about is how the draught in a bottle compares with the draught over in Ireland. I heard the reason a “pint of plain” or Stout puts people off in America is over in Europe you’re allowed to use an unpasteurized wort. So it gives the drink some tang for lack of a better word. How about the draught? I’ve had it but only in America. I usually avoid it because I think it’s overpriced when I can get the Stout instead which has more alcohol.
