Greg Paulus was a very highly recruited football (Notre Dame) and basketball (Duke) player coming out of high school 4 years ago. And since I am an unusually jealous and hateful man, I will take this opportunity to rip on him.
So, after a failed Duke basketball career, Greg has decided to take a shot at football. No, not pro football like Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates, but college football like uhhh nobody. First of all, is this even legal after playing 4 years of college bball? Apparently yes, since he didn’t redshirt at all he has some eligibility remaining as long it is another sport. Second of all, what the hell? Why not try out for an arena league team or something if you think you are good enough. I mean this is a miserable idea. More school, getting beat up playing football, not even getting paid…
After a promising start at Duke, Greg played progressively fewer minutes every season. This season was especially bad after losing his starting job and having his point and assist totals more than cut in half (played 2 minutes against Texas in the round of 32). As an alum of another ACC school, I love to see a former promising Dukie fizzle like so many others. Unfortunately for Paulus, most of those others at least got to the NBA before losing their job. However, as a fellow competitive man, I can appreciate his desire to try to grab some of his youthful prowess. However, I just don’t see college football being the answer. Especially for someone who just looks like he could use a good punch in the face and/or nuts in the face care of Danny Green.
Lucky for him, it sounds like the Duke football team (always highly regarded) might let him play WR in some practices this spring. Success!

UPDATE: Now it appears Paulus is wanted at Michigan to quarterback the Wolverines. I’m sure the fans at Ohio State (including our own Bill Brasky) are excited about seeing this failure in the Big Ten.

Great piece on that clown paulus, I am an ACC alum too, just graduated Wake Forest, and nothing was better than watching paulus get worked the last two years by Jeff Teague. I just wish Chris Paul would have stayed one more year because Paulus would still be recovering from ankle surgery if he had to try and cover paul.
