I picked up a sixer of Sam Adams Summer Ale on the way home last night mostly because the yellow label caught my eye and it was on sale. I’d been planning on a more obscure micro-brew but the possibility of six beers sold me over the single 22 ouncer.
Sam Adams is a wheat beer but it’s definitely not another hefeweizen. The beer pours with a cloudy golden color with a small amount of head that leaves no lacing on the glass. The aroma has nice citrus notes that follow through in the flavor. The beer has a hoppy flavor, like most Sam Adams beers, with lemon and grapefruit notes at the beginning and finishing with a strong wheat beer flavor. Sam Adams desribes the beer as:
Refreshing, crisp, and tangy, Summer Ale is brewed with wheat malt, lemon zest and Grain of Paradise, a mysterious brewing spice used by Renaissance brewers centuries ago.
Grains of Paradise sound fancy but they aren’t going to convince me to buy this beer again. It’s fine and I’ll finish off the sixer but I reviewed plenty of other beers, especially in the last few weeks, at this price point that I would bring to the summer BBQ before this one.

I’d agree. Not bad but there are a lot of better choices as you mentioned, especially for the price.
