Brewery Name and Location: Rogue Ales - Oregon
Name of Brew: Captain Sig’s Northwestern Ale
Style of Brew: India Red Ale

I’ve been catching a lot of Deadliest Catch reruns on the Discovery Channel lately so when I saw a Deadliest Catch related beer at my local super market I had to pick it up. Rogue Ales’s Captain Sig’s Northwestern Ale is made in honor of Captain Sig Hansen and his two brothers Eric and Norman who run the crab fishing boat the Northwestern. The partnership between Sig and Rogue came about when Sig decided the crab that he catches in the Bering Sea needed a beer to go along with it.

Captain Sig’s Northwestern Ale is cross between a Red Ale and an India Pale Ale. It’s the got color and the maltiness of a Red Ale but brings the hoppy flavor of an India Pale Ale. Rogue describes it with the following:

Deep red in color, this ale starts off with a floral, slightly citrus hop nose, hop flavor soon fades into the malty backbone of this red ale.

Captain Sig’s Northwestern Ale is only served in 22oz bottles so don’t waste your time looking for a sixer. For a beer that I randomly stumbled across I have to say that it’s delicious. Anchor Steam is still my current go to sipping beer but I’d have to say that Captain Sig’s Northwestern Ale is definitely in the top 5. If you’re a huge fan of the show then you definitely need to head out a pick up a couple of bottles before the next episode.

Cap’n Sig’s Deadliest Ale has more balls than a pool table. It really needs crab though, which is something I’m learning about beer in general — reading “Tasting Beer,” which goes into great depth about matching beers with food. But if you’re not eating crab or at least mussels, you’re going to be saying, “Gee, that’s bitter” toward the end.
