Fantasy Football: It’s Go Time

by J Diggles on August 25, 2009

eddie-royalYou just watched Mark Sanchez basically suck in last nights Monday Night Football Preseason game.  Fortunately for you, unless you are in a 2-QB league, you probably didn’t draft him.  And if you were thinking about it, stop.  Long-term, I think Sanchez will be a decent pro, somewhere in between fellow Trojans Palmer and Lienart.  Perhaps Casselesque success.  But this year, growing pains will be the story…along with the mediocrity of being a Jet. At draft time, pass on Sanchez and try steady backup fantasy options Joe Flacco or Kerry Collins.

Others to stay away from:

I heard an ESPN analyst say the other day that they thought Julius Jones would have better numbers this year than former ball-buddy Marion Barber.  That, of course, is ridiculous for many reasons.  Aside from TJ Ducket hawking TD’s and Julius missing preseason games due to injury, rumors are that the Hawks have just made a play for 31-year old ex-stud Edgerrin James.  Now I know Edge doesn’t have much left in the tank, but Julius has never proved he has anything in the tank. Take the upside play here instead with Beanie Wells or Knowshon Moreno.

Yahoo! is currently projecting that Denver’s Eddie Royal will rack up the 11th most fantasy points of all wide recievers next year.  What you may not have noticed, however, is that Yahoo! is assuming 1,500+ kick/punt return yards from the young speedster and only 600+ recieving yards.  Why, you ask, for a guy who caught for 980 yards in his rookie season last year?  Kyle Orton (see Devin Hester’s numbers last year).  But don’t count on those return yards just yet either.  In fact, not one player reached that mark last year. Try clear pass catchers Lee Evans or Hines Ward.
