I was tired of playing eeny-meeny-miny-moe in the Top Foods beer aisle so I decided to ask for some suggestions on Twitter. I got a lot of great suggestions and in the end I went with La Fin Du Monde recommended by @softcoeur. I was initially leaning towards an IPA recommended by @frankyoshida but when I got to the beer aisle and saw that La Fin Du Monde was one of those big 24 oz bottles with the cork in the top like champagne I knew I had to get it. I’ve drank a lot of different beers in my day but this was definitely the first one that I had to pop like a bottle of champagne.
The first thing I did when I popped the bottle open was smell the cork and I was a little surprised that it smelled exactly like champagne. The beer pours with a cloudy golden color and a thick bubbly head that dissipates quickly. It’s got a strong malty smell with hints of citrus and other fruits. The beer has a slight bitter flavor with hints of apple, pear and orange peel. There is also a hint of spice at the end that taste like clove or coriander. The beer has a great, bubbly mouth feel that goes down smooth with a little aftertaste of those spices. Unibroue describes La Fin Du Monde with the following:
It is a 9 percent alcohol, triple fermentation beer. This type of beer was originally developed by the monks of the Middle Ages to be served on special occasions. La Fin du Monde is a deluxe beer made by triple fermentation and a unique way of straining the yeast. This method produces an unexpectedly subtle flavour. With its champagne-like effervescence, it has a vigourous presence in the mouth, which accentuates its strong personality. Slightly tart, with the balanced flavours of wild spices, malt and hops, it belongs to the class of great Trappist beers and, in this regard, is a North American first.
This is the not the kind of beer that I usually drink but I’ve got to admit I really liked it. I was iffy about it at first but I’m on my second glass now from the 24 oz bottle and it’s delicious. This is not the kind of beer that you’d take out on a fourteen-light-beer-night but it is the kind of beer that could replace wine at a nice dinner. I’m not sure what the chances of finding La Fin Du Monde on tap are but I know that if I ever come across it in one of the restaurants that have 100+ beers on tap I’m definitely going to get at least one.
Thanks again to @softcoeur for the suggestion.
