Last week was the first installment of the tasting I did at the Oregon Brewer’s Festival. Below are two more beers, these I actually liked, that I had the opportunity of trying at the Brewfest and wasn’t at the point of drunkenness, that I can remember what they tasted like. Enjoy!
Brewery Name and Location: Anderson Valley Brewing Company - Mendocino County, Calif.
Name of Brew: Summer Solstice Cerveza Crema
Style of Brew: Cream Ale
ABV: 5.5%
When I saw Anderson Valley Brewing Company was at the Brewfest, I had to make an effort to try out whatever they were serving, as they brew one of my favorite Amber Ales, the Boont Amber Ale. I didn’t know what to expect with their summer seasonal, the Summer Solstic Cerveza Crema. Sounds interesting and also sounds like something you could easily eff up. Surprisingly, it was a great beer. Darker than normal summer beers, the Crema is just that, almost like a alcoholic cream soda. At first, you might think the cream taste is a little strong, but as you get past the initial shock, the flavoring becomes an afterthought and is a great complement to hops. Make an effort to find this one before it goes away for the summer.
Brewery Name and Location: Cascade Lakes Brewing Company - Redmond, OR
Name of Brew: Blonde Bombshell
Style of Brew: Blonde Ale
ABV: 4.0%
There’s a certain point at Brewfest when you need to take a break, you’ve been drinking for three days straight, you’ve been out in 90 degree heat and one more heavy beer is going to push you in bad decision territory. Now, this doesn’t mean you stop drinking, because if you’re just going to stand there like an asshole with an empty beer glass, that’s not cool. So, you have to do some pre-Brewfest research to find your “slow-play” beer, something with a low ABV. This year, it was the Blonde Bombshell. As the brewer states, “It’s a knockout with a great body.” Agreed. For one of the lighter beers at the festival, it’s not short on taste and kept me from throwing up on myself.
