Every beer is going to try and claim something that makes it unique…even the shittiest of beers still holds onto the “blue ribbon” they won about a hundred years ago. Some claims are impressive and unique, well Lhasa Beer actually is the first beer anywhere in the world to use the type of barley native to the Tibetan plateau in the modern brewing process. Not only that, the Tibet Lhasa Brewery Company Ltd. in Lhasa, Tibet is the world’s highest commercial brewery located at 11,975 feet in elevation and it is the only one in the Tibetan Autonomous Region.
Well, they did something good with those two unique aspects of Lhasa Beer. It has a smooth taste and just strong enough with the hops and barely, but without a bitter aftertaste. The beer is almost a blend of European style pilsner and lager. In fact, Lhasa uses the most expensive hops in the world. So, you might be paying a premium for Lhase Beer thinking the extra cost is the result of the shipping from Tibet (also because the beer is sold at Whole Foods where everything is more expensive), but Lhasa uses the most expensive hops in the world.
Either way, Lhasa Beer is definitely a good conversation starter and a good beer. Although, I highly doubt that anyone at Lhasa, Tibet and China has access to TastyBooze so they’ll never see this great review of their beer!
