I picked up a 24oz bottle of Shiner Bock at the store last night based on a recommendation that I’d gotten. I was excited to try it but I’ve got to admit it wasn’t what I was expecting. Maybe I should have realized I wasn’t exactly going to be getting a microbrew when the 24oz bottle rang up to $1.74.
The beer pours with a dark amber color with hints of copper and red. There was a small amount of fizzy head that quickly dissipated and after a few sips any lacing down the glass was nonexistent. The beer gives off a slight fruity smell along with some caramel malt. The taste is mostly malt with just the slightest bit of hops at the very end. The beer feels very light and thin in the mouth like a Miller Lite or a Budweiser. The Spoetzl Brewery describes Shiner Bock with the following:
With its deep amber color, distinctive rich flavor and full body, Shiner Bock demonstrates the care of a handcrafted brewing process to bring forth a mellow taste free of the bitter aftertaste found in many micro, specialty and imported beers. Just think of it as Shiner smooth.
While my overall Shiner Bock experience wasn’t was I was expecting it’s still a decent beer. I would definitely pick up a couple of these 24 ouncers or even a sixer on my way to summer BBQ just to mix things up. It’s got a fairly low BAC so you would easily blow through quite of few of these in a summer afternoon or before a night on the town before you had to be worried about being ass over tea kettle. I’d say if you generally like amber beers and you’re looking to break out of your Budweiser rut the Shiner Bock is a solid choice.
