A bar in the UK has started breathalyzing all their patrons leaving the bar at the end of the night. They aren’t looking to get anyone in trouble they are just trying to be sure that they’ve done their job as a bar. Anyone found to have a BAC under the 0.08% legal limit when they leave the club at 3 a.m. will have their bar tab refunded. On top of that the person found to have the highest BAC at the end of the night wins free cover for the following week.
Adverts for the Tuesday night special, dubbed Trashed, say it has ‘one simple aim’, which is to get revellers ‘nailed, battered, done-in and, well, proper ****ing trashed’.
And the promotional material adds: ‘If you’re legal to drive at 3am, we’ll refund your entry money because in our eyes you’re not Trashed, so we’ve failed in our mission.’
Of course a bunch of stuffy bastards are up in arms about this but if anything I think the bar is doing a good thing. Sure they are encouraging drinking but at the end of the night they are letting their customers know whether or not they are legal to drive. Sure a prick that has his mind set on driving is going to drive regardless but I bet more than a few people who thought they were okay would rethink their plans to drive if they blew over a 0.08% on their way out the door.
