Beer Review Friday - Red Rock Amber Ale

by Baba Ganoush on October 30, 2009

amberaleBrewery Name: Red Rock Brewing Company
Location: Salt Lake City, UT
Name of Brew: Amber Ale
Style of Brew: “Northwest Style Pale Ale”
ABV: N/A

This is the second time I’ve traveled away from home and found a brewery claiming to produce a “Northwest Style” of beer. The first was the Amber Waves Ale from Capitol City Brewing Company in Washington, DC. Obviously people seem to like the beers produced in the Northwest and I would have to agree, the guys around here know how to brew some good shit.

The Red Rock Amber Ale in fact is their No. 1 best seller, not really a surprise if you ask me. Their category of “Northwest Style Pale Ale” fits the Amber Ale perfectly, as it does have the color and aroma of an amber ale, but the bitterness of a pale ale. If I’m being honest, it’s essentially a poor man’s Manny’s - from the Georgetown Brewery in Seattle.

From the brewery:

The brew gets its name from an amber coloring and is medium in body with medium caramel character. Our Amber Ale is brewed from copious amounts of Cascade Hops which give the brew its bitterness and aroma alongside a medium malty character.

Now, being a poor man’s Manny’s isn’t necessarily a bad thing. After a long week in Salt Lake City, the Amber Ale hit the spot and made me feel at home in the SLC. Red Rock has a ton of beers on tap and is definitely worth dropping in, even if you just want to feel like you’re back in the Northwest.
