I played a little pin-the-tail-on-the-beer at my local Top Foods last night and a 22 oz. of Ninkasi Total Domination IPA can out the winner. I know, it’s shocking that I would end up picking an IPA. I’m going to have to start asking for more suggestions via Twitter just so that I branch out a little bit. At this point I could almost just replace “Friday” in the post title with “IPA”.
The Total Domination has a nice light amber color that looks a little gold around the edges and cloudy in the middle. I only got about a half inch of off white head but that small amount of head did manage to leave nice lacing all the way down the glass. The Total Domination has a great citrus nose with heavy hints of grapefruit along with lighter hints of pineapple and mango. It’s got great mouth feel with a medium body and middle of the road carbonation. The citrus flavors along with a hoppy bitterness that you would expect from any good IPA hit your taste buds right away. That hoppy bitterness is solid throughout but gives way to a little sweetness at the end that leaves almost no aftertaste. Ninkasi describes the Total Domination with the following:
A true Northwest style IPA, citrus notes, floral and balanced, from ingredients regionally sourced, it is the definition of a true craft beer.
Frankly, this is one of the best IPAs I’ve had in a long time. Dogfish Head still reigns supreme with my favorite IPA but this Total Domination from Ninkasi is easily in the top 3. I’m just about to finish the first keg I bought for the kegerator and I’ve been thinking about what to replace it with. It might take some leg work to find a local distributor that carries kegs of Ninkasi but I think it would definitely be worth it to have this stuff on tap at home. Plus at 6.7% I can drink a couple on Sunday, which stays below the fiancee’s radar, and still catch a nice little buzz.
Even if you’re not usually a fan of IPAs I would definitely recommend giving the Total Domination a try if you run across it in your local bottle shop or on tap at the local watering hole.
